DESIGN PRINCIPLES PROJECT 1 - SELF POTRAIT
AMELIA INTAN CAHYANI 0355211 - Bachelor of Design in creative media
Instructions
Week 3
Due to the chinese new year break, there are no meetings in week three, however we were encouraged to complete a self-portrait project.
On this project the self-portrait exercise gives us the chance to research both traditional and modern modes of self-expression, as well as to evaluate the design concepts discussed before and better determine our own plan of designing.
Essentially a self-portrait is nothing other than a way to capture one's appearance; it frequently includes the artist's characteristics, profile, emotions, and interests. It serves as a tool for analysis, self-definition, identity, and public communication. By extend, this theme is focused with how authors characterise their own realities and traits.
Design process
Brief Recap
I started watching the video the lecturer provided for this assignment, which is a self-portrait, in week three. and since then, I first began to gain and envision the idea of my traits and the theme of the art itself.

Idea Exploration
The most of the elements on my mind map are things I would consider including in my self-portrait, such as my character, my interests, fantasies, etc. however since my mindmap is simply writing, I won't include it here. Instead, I'll describe the entire process.
For the sketch, I was trying to go for a sitting pose

I was going for a fairy theme because I enjoy arts visualisation in fantasy themes, and this is what I came up with so far for the sketch.
Since I love fantasies, especially fairytales and all mystical beings, I decided to visualise myself as a fairy and I added wings and an elf-like ear to my drawing. I might as well include this on the sketch since I like wearing skirts and collecting cute socks, as you can tell by what I'm wearing.
I'm just going for a simple colouring and contrast in some parts as I begin colouring my designs. I'm choosing a dark, straightforward monotone hue for the outfit because that's how I generally dress. And as I mentioned the pink flames above on the visual reference, I included the flamy thing on the wings. I also chose a vibrant pink and white aura. Why the pink and bright colours? because I always aim to radiate a positive vibe and my best self to others which I'll present in my final outcome.
Final Outcome
I choose a simple cartoon-ish, anime? Art style. Fairly simple because it binds to the thoughts i'm going for. Contrast is the design principle i was aiming for, as i've previously stated in some parts. Generally, it shows how people perceive me. The bright happy traits is what counts, right? Instead of our dark alter-ego. Nevertheless, it truly highlights the aspects of it that i thoroughly enjoy.
Feedback
Despite the fact that I sent the results a little bit last-minute and as a result haven't yet received any response, yet I am optimistic that they are valid for submission.
Reflection
Ever since the lecturer gave us instructions to do this project, I brainstormed madly and kept making adjustments until I was satisfied. I've even got more than four rough draft in my drawing software.
I started experimenting with colour after deciding that I wanted to draw fantasy, and although pink is not usually my colour of choice, I believe it fits well with the art's story.
The core message of the artwork is that I am very good at putting on a poker face for other people. In addition, as I've already stated, I always do my best to provide a strong positive image of myself to others. And by that, I was able to overcome the situation towards this genuine representation of myself.
