Task 2 - Typographic Exploration & Communication

Lectures - Week 5

Mr. Vinod gave us a briefing on this new assignment, allowing for us to use the knowledge we learned from Task 1: Type Expression and Text Formatting. and it is required that we see the playlist of lectures to begin progressing through them.

Instructions

Task 2 - Typographic Exploration & Communication

We will be expected to express the text from the provided link typographically in task 2. No pictures are allowed.  Some minor graphical elements such as line, shade, etc, might be allowed.

We were instructed to pick an article of content from the linked page provided by Mr. Vinod, express the title, format the paragraphs using text, and design a layout for it.
My progress has started with my layout ideas, and I've also done some research on Pinterest.

1. Visual Reference

I use the words "a code to build on and live by" and the concept of code characters basically like this.

2. Idea Exploration

I therefore chose to type the title of the idea exploration in "gill sans- light italic" for the code characters.

I then chose to decide on the last one (on the right), and this is what I came up with. However, after receiving feedback from the lecturer, I realised that my headline was incorrect.

4. Feedback

Week 6:
General Feedback: maintain the same line length, avoid using paragraph spacing that is different lengths.
Specific Feedback: wrong headline, theres widow and too much kerning

5. Reflection

Experience: Since I was able to understand Illustrator and the basics of typography, the exercise went a little better.

Observation: I have noticed that even the slightest parts of the text matter. If not done correctly, font size, spacing, cross alignment, etc can change how the layout appears. As there needs to be an organised sequence of information that draws the reader's eye, the hierarchy of information is equally important.  The title is what readers will see first, therefore it should be catchy, then the formatting and placement of the remaining information.

Findings: I've learned how to express the text's meanings rather than merely concentrating on the design. Next, align the text with the headline to improve text layout visually, and avoid overkerning.

6. Further Reading

structure and space, which indicates that the use of space as a component of communication in typography. It is suggested in the book that we visualise type using grids of space. think of a grid line that emanates from space-based things, for instance. Additionally, according to the book, how we see a letterform depends on its orientation inside a certain area.
